Sometimes I’m asked, “Why free races?” My answer is simple: why not?
When you pay $40 (or more!) to run a race, you’re covering the cost of a t-shirt, a timing chip, live music, and other extras—whether you want them or not. Personally, I already have plenty of race shirts, I tend to time myself anyway, and music doesn’t do much to motivate me.
When I first started running in the ’60s, races were much simpler. You’d show up a few minutes before the start, pay $5, and receive a handmade bib with your number written in marker. No shirts, no loudspeakers, no bands, no chips, and no online registration or results.
If paying $40 for a race experience is worth it to you, that’s great—I run those races too. But if it’s not, now you have another option. You can join a no-frills race and save your money for shoes or other gear.
I don’t organize races to make money. I do it to share my passion for running, to help others discover new places to run, to bring together like-minded people, and maybe even spark a few new friendships.
Our races are chip-timed with free breakfast burritos and drinks at the finish. All races are at Chatfield State Park starting at 9:00 a.m. on a Saturday, October - March. You have a choice of at least three distance options at each event. For more details, go to the "Runs, Races, Maps" tab above.
You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Strava.
